Biography

Prof. Md. Shafiqul Islam is a distinguished academic and public health professional currently serving as a Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the National Institute of Preventive & Social Medicine (NIPSOM) in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He holds an MBBS from Mymensingh Medical College (University of Dhaka), a Master's in Industrial Health from NIPSOM, an MSc in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.


With a strong background in epidemiology, Prof. Islam has a prolific academic and research career. His publications focus on a range of public health issues, including the feasibility of oral cholera vaccines, physical activity levels in Bangladeshi adults, predictors of diabetes distress, and socio-demographic factors of non-communicable diseases. These works are featured in reputable journals like The Lancet and Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health.


Prof. Islam is actively engaged in ongoing research projects, including the UNICEF-supported Competency-Based Training (CBT) in Nutrition aimed at equipping healthcare providers with skills to combat malnutrition across 23 districts and 3 city corporations in Bangladesh. His contributions significantly enhance health service delivery and policy development in the region.

Job Responsibilities

    • Ensure research adheres to ethical guidelines such as the Declaration of Helsinki and Good Clinical Practice (GCP).
    • Assess study protocols, informed consent forms, and investigator qualifications.
    • Verify informed consent documents are clear, comprehensive, and compliant.
    • Oversee study progress, review adverse events, and ensure protocol adherence.
    • Ensure compliance with regulatory laws and guidelines, such as FDA and EMA standards.
    • Maintain impartiality by avoiding conflicts of interest and preserving confidentiality.
    • Keep accurate documentation of IRB decisions, meeting minutes, and communications.
    • Act as a liaison between sponsors, investigators, and regulatory authorities.
    • Stay updated on regulatory developments and contribute to ethical training programs.
